Outreach
Some outreach activities by nees@UCLA include:
- The 4th International IASPEI/IAEE Symposium on the Effects of Surface Geology on Seismic Motion (ESG4) was held at the University of California Santa Barbara from August 23 - 26, 2011. The Symposium consisted of a pre-meeting NEES workshop, 16 plenary sessions, and a half-day workshop on the Vs30 debate. The invited speakers were an international group of scientists and engineers who spoke on diverse topics from the state of the art of ground motion research and practice. The topic of the pre-meeting NEES Workshop was "Using the NEES Equipment Site Facilities in ESG Research and International Collaborations". Dr. Robert Nigbor, co-PI and Site Operations Manager of NEES@UCLA, presented the NEES@UCLA and NEES@UTexas facilities. Dr. Jamison Steidl presented the NEES@UCSB facility and gave a video tour of the web-based waveform viewer. International collaborations were presented by Dr. Atsushi Wakai of Japan and Dr. Atilla Ansal of Turkey. Panel discussions on future research needs were led by Dr. Fabian Bonilla of France, Professor Youssef Hashash of the University of Illinois and Professor Steven Kramer of the University of Washington. The ESG working group was created jointly by IASPE (International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior) and IAEE (International Association of Earthquake Engineering) almost thirty years ago to promote a greater understanding and analysis of the effects of surface geology on ground motion. Find here details of the Symposium and Workshop, including presentations.
- nees@UCLA was featured in a July 2010 article in Civil Engineering magazine regarding the LAX Theme Building seismic retrofit. nees@UCLA was also featured in print, web, and television news for this project, and was an invited participant in the Grand Reopening of the LAX Theme Building along with the Mayor and several Councilpersons of LA City and two California representatives.
- nees@UCLA was one of the four NEES sites participating in the NEES Demo Day field trip on May 29, 2010 at NEES@UCSD. This was part of the 5th International Conference on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Dynamics held in San Diego.
- nees@UCLA was co-sponsor of the IRIS Instrumentation Symposium held in Palm Springs in November 2009. This was an excellent seismology-earthquake engineering collaboration.
- nees@UCLA participated in the November 2008 Great SoCal Shakeout event. A field trip from the Los Angeles International Earthquake Conference was hosted at UCLA, during which lab and field demonstrations were made by nees@UCLA staff.
- nees@UCLA was featured in a PBS television program Southern California Connected in November 2008.
- nees@UCLA participated in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics (GEESD) IV. The portable shaker was exhibited.
- nees@UCLA's linear shaker and instrumentation was used in a UCLA engineering class called E87 by three freshman students. It was a first-quarter laboratory experience. Here is an abridged version of the students' presentation for their class. (5MB)
